Dhoti for Kids: Types, How to Tie It and What to Buy

Kids' dhotis come in three types: the traditional wrap, the pre stitched velcro dhoti, and the dhoti pant. For anyone under eight, pre stitched is the practical choice  it looks identical in photos and survives running. The traditional wrap can be learned from about age eight, and the method is below.

The dhoti, called veshti in Tamil and mundu in Malayalam, is the most traditional thing a South Indian boy can wear. It's also, in its original form, an engineering challenge on a moving child. The garment industry solved this, so let's start with the solutions.

Most secure of all

1. The traditional wrap dhoti. A single rectangle of cloth, usually cotton, wrapped and tucked at the waist. Authentic, elegant, and on a child it lasts as long as the child stands still.

2. The pre stitched dhoti. Pleats sewn permanently in place, closing with velcro or a hook behind an elastic panel. From two feet away it reads as a perfect wrap. For every boy under eight and every parent who would rather watch the wedding than re-wrap a dhoti in a corridor.

3. The dhoti pant. Stitched fully as a garment with legs, the drape is suggested rather than wrapped. The most secure of all three.

Our boys collection focuses on pre stitched dhotis and dhoti pants, because that's what stays on a child in real life.

How to tie a traditional dhoti on a child

For the boys old enough to wear the real thing. You'll need a child's veshti (about two metres) and two minutes of his patience.

  1. Hold the dhoti behind him at the waist, equal lengths to each side, the top edge sitting at his navel.
  2. Bring both ends to the front and tie a single firm knot, snug but two fingers loose. The knot carries everything take your time here.
  3. Take the right length and pleat it into four or five hand-width folds, like folding a paper fan.
  4. Tuck the pleated bundle into the waist at the centre front, pushing it down firmly behind the knot.
  5. Wrap the left length around the back to the front and tuck it at the right hip.
  6. Check the length. For kids, ankle length invites tripping. Fold the bottom hem up and tuck at the waist the half fold is standard for boys and frees the feet.
  7. Add a safety pin at the centre front tuck, hidden inside. Tradition forgives the pin. Everyone's grandfather uses one too.

Practice once at home before the event. The second attempt takes a third of the time.

What to look for when buying

  • Cotton or cotton blend fabric, never slippery synthetics  they won't hold a tuck and they run hot
  • A matching angavastram (shoulder cloth) if the occasion is formal, pinned to the shirt shoulder so it survives
  • Encased elastic on pre stitched versions the elastic should never touch skin directly
  • Zari border width by occasion: thin border for temple visits, wider gold for weddings and festivals

FAQ

At what age can a boy wear a dhoti? A dhoti pant from infancy, a pre stitched dhoti from about one year, and the traditional wrap from around eight, when he can manage it and it can manage him.

How long is a kids dhoti? Children's veshtis run roughly 1.5 to 2 metres depending on age, against about 3.5 to 4 metres for adults. Pre stitched dhotis are sized by waist like regular clothing.

What is the difference between dhoti and veshti? The same garment with different names: dhoti in Hindi and most of India, veshti in Tamil Nadu, mundu in Kerala, panche in Karnataka. Regional styles vary slightly in length and border.

How do I stop a dhoti from falling off a child? Use a pre stitched dhoti for any child under eight. For a traditional wrap, tie the first knot firmly at the navel and add a hidden safety pin at the front tuck.
