7 steps to wash and maintain a maggam blouse
- Prepare it first. Check for loose sequins, beads or threads and secure them with a tiny stitch or a dab of fabric glue. Turn the blouse inside out, and place it in a mesh garment bag if you have one.
- Pick a mild detergent. Use a gentle, residue-free detergent. Skip bleach and fabric softener, which dull the sparkle and can discolour the work. Always use cold water, since hot water shrinks fabric and bleeds colour.
- Hand wash gently. Submerge the blouse in cold soapy water and let it soak for ten to fifteen minutes. Swish it lightly to lift dirt. Do not rub or stretch the stitches.
- Dry with care. Press the water out gently, never wring. Lay the blouse flat on a clean towel to blot the moisture, then dry it flat on a rack, reshaping as needed. Keep it out of direct sun.
- Store it right. Hang it on a padded hanger so the weight sits evenly, and cover it in a breathable cotton or muslin bag to keep out dust and insects. Store somewhere cool and dark.
- Spot clean small stains. Identify the stain first, then blot with a clean white cloth, do not rub. For a stubborn mark, test a little white vinegar or a fabric stain remover on a hidden area before treating the spot.

How often should you wash it?
Less than you think. Maggam blouses are occasion wear, so unless it is stained, an airing and a spot clean between wears is usually enough. The fewer full washes a worked blouse goes through, the longer the beads, sequins and zari stay bright.
