Frequently Asked Questions about Chanderi Sarees
What is a Chanderi saree?
Chanderi is a traditional handloom saree woven in the Chanderi town of Madhya Pradesh known for its sheer, lightweight body, classic zari borders, and characteristic buti motifs (small woven dots or floral shapes). Chanderi can be pure cotton, pure silk, or silk-cotton blend; most modern Chanderi sarees are silk-cotton, giving a balance of comfort and lustre. The craft has GI (Geographical Indication) status protecting authentic Chanderi.
What's the difference between Chanderi cotton, Chanderi silk, and Chanderi silk cotton?
Chanderi cotton is pure handloom cotton most breathable, most affordable, ideal for everyday and warm-weather wear. Chanderi silk is pure silk most lustrous, with rich drape, suited to festive and formal occasions. Chanderi silk cotton is the most popular variant silk warp with cotton weft, balancing the comfort of cotton with the shine of silk. Most of Studio Virupa's Chanderi range is silk cotton.
What occasions are Chanderi sarees suitable for?
Chanderi sarees work for office wear, semi-formal events, daytime weddings, family functions, festivals, pooja events, and casual elegant occasions. How do I care for a Chanderi saree?
Dry-clean Chanderi sarees for the first 2-3 washes to preserve the zari and any hand-painting. After that, gentle hand wash in cold water with mild detergent. Never wring roll in a soft towel to remove water. Dry in shade to prevent fading of zari. Iron on the reverse side at low to medium heat. Store folded with the zari on the inside, with cotton paper between folds.
Are Chanderi sarees suitable for daily wear?

Chanderi silk cotton with zari can be worn for elevated daily wear or semi-formal days, though regular washing isn't recommended due to the zari.
