Pen Kalamkari, also called Kalahasti Kalamkari, is drawn entirely by hand with a bamboo pen by artisans in Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh. A single saree can take a few weeks to finish, and no two pieces ever come out the same. Block print Kalamkari is stamped with hand carved wooden blocks, which makes it quicker to produce and easier on the budget. Both styles use natural dyes and the same traditional motifs you will see across the collection: peacock pallus, scenes from the Ramayana, Raja Rani borders, Bal Krishna Pichwai, floral vines and elephant pallus, all rooted in the craft traditions of Andhra Pradesh.

How do I care for a Kalamkari saree?

Dry clean hand painted Kalamkari sarees for the first two or three washes so the natural dyes stay rich. After that, a gentle hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent works well. Do not wring the saree. Roll it in a towel to remove extra water, dry it in the shade rather than direct sunlight, and iron on the reverse at low to medium heat.
